Ballymac Deniro
HE might have “only” run second in the Group 1 English Derby at the weekend, but current UK star Ballymac Deniro certainly deserves a pedigree analysis.
The son of Ballymac Flynn-Ballymac Arminta by Ballymac Best has already won the G1 Juvenile Classic around Tralee back home in Ireland.
He went into the Derby final the favourite but had to be satisfied with second behind Lennies Eddie (Good Cody-Protunma Marina by Ballymac Best).
Any analysis of the pedigree of the Derby winner and runner-up will centre on the “Ballymac” influence.
Both are out of a daughter of Ballymac Best a 350 yard Limerick track record holder. He ran second in a 285 yard G2 at Sunderland as another career highlight.
It certainly shows the difference in racing between Ireland, England and that in Australia.
What 350 yard specialist in Australia would get to sire 3070 progeny.
Greyhound racing in Ireland and England is all about speed, not the 500m plus strength that is needed to win at the highest level in this country.
Which brings us back to Ballymac Deniro.
Get onto Greyhound Data and check out his pedigree.
It is a sight to behild.
His sire, Ballymac Finn (Droopys Sydney-Ballymac Petsy by Ballymac Best) is line bred 3x3 to Ballymac Maeve along the direct sireline on both sides of his pedigree.
When he was mated to Ballymac Arminta to produce the English Derby runner-up, it introduced a 3x2 cross of Ballymac Best.
That 3x2 cross is also the same position in which Chief Havoc is found in the pedigree of legend race and broodbitch Elsie Moss, and the same position in which Brother Fox is found in Alice Dooley the foundation bitch of the Feral Franky/Good Odds Cobber/Good Odds Harada damline.
But, the intensity doesn’t end there.
The before mentioned Ballymac Maeve is by the great Aussie Roanokee and his dam is Blonde Returns a legend broodbitch in Ireland.
We have already seen that Deniro’s sire Ballymac Finn is line-bred 3x3 to Ballymac Maeve … thus in-bred to Blonde Returns.
Deniro’s dam, Ballymac Arminta is also line bred to Blond Returns. She has the half relations Ballymac Maeve and Ballymac Gloss (both out of Blonde Returns) 2x2.
So, the pedigree match that produced Ballymac Deniro, a G1 winner and Derby runner-up, shows four crosses of Blonde Returns. He is the product of Ballymac Finn and Ballymac Arminta who are BOTH bred on a duplication of Blonde Returns.
Which brings us back to the Derby winner, Lennies Eddie.
His sire Good Cody was a multiple G1 winner in Ireland and is from the famed Surf Lorian sireline, so strong in Ireland through his great son Definate Opinion.
Lennies Eddie’s pedigree shows strong line breeding to Brett Lee and his half brother Ballintore Brave (a litter brother to Big Daddy Cool).
He traces along his direct damline to Millie’s May winner of the Coursing Oaks way back in 1951. She produced Dandy Man winner of the Coursing Derby in 1961.
Her daughter Racing Millie became a legend at stud as well.
Racing Millie’s daughter, April Merry, produced 1971 English greyhound of the year, the great Westpark Mustard.
