Raw Ability

RAW Ability was always something special when he was the apple of trainer Anthony Azzopardi's eye during his race career.

And, why wouldn't he?

He was successful at Group 1 level in the Paws Of Thunder and Adelaide Cup and placed in the Warrnambool Cup. He also made the final of the Topgun, Melbourne Cup, Temlee, Australian Cup and Healesville Cup.

He was no slouch on the track and fully deserved to get his chance at stud.

He had an instant hit at stud when Bobby Cooke's Cash View (Raw Ability-Cashpot) won the Brett Memorial Maiden at Albion Park (in 29.76), the Group 2 Lismore Cup and set a track record at Grafton.

But it has been in recent weeks that Raw Ability has signalled himself a boom young stud dog via the deeds of Respectability and his litter sister Black Magic Rose, and the similarly bred Mellcat Big Boy.

All the world knows about Respectability (Raw Ability-Fay's Magic) the winner of the Listed Grafton Cup and a 29.58 winner at Albion Park. The world wants to buy him. Trainer and part-owner Mick Patterson will have none of it.

His litter sister Black Magic Rose had the misfortune at Albion Park last Thursday night of running into a potential superstar in Gypsy Del when second in the G3 Young Guns final.

She too is a class act, just like her brother.

They are bred on some hugely proven lines.

Their dam Fay's Magic (Magic Sprite-All Hands On by Bombastic Shiraz) went to Raw Ability's sire Barcia Bale to produce All Hands Off a star in her own right. It was a super litter as well.

Fay's Magic won 17 races and $51,000 on the track and was Group class during her race career.

Respectability is bred on the highly proven Barcia Bale/Magic Sprite cross (found in Qld GOTY Fast Times etc). But he also carries a 4x3 double and balance of Bombastic Shiraz.

Which brings us to Mellcat Big Boy (Raw Ability-Mellcat Magic by Magic Sprite) a 29.74 winner at Wenty in the past two weeks who had already run a Goulburn track record as a youngster.

Yes, Mellcat Big Boy is bred on an identical Raw Ability/Magic Sprite/Bombastic Shiraz cross.

What is even more interesting in the pedigree of Mellcat Big Boy is that he is actually in-bred 3x2 to Bit Chili and his virtual sister Miss Tandur. Both are by Bombastic Shiraz and both are out of daughters of the famed Alice Dooley.

Respectability's direct damline is chock full of high class race bitches and producers.

His dam Fay's Magic, as mentioned above, won 17 and was placed 30 times in 73 starts. She won the Lismore Distance Title, was second in a Clem Jones Cup at Albion Park and a finalist in the G3 Qld Cup.

Next dam, All Hands On won seven and was placed nine times in 36 starts up to 620m.

Ruby Hand, third dam of Respectability, was by Rich Hand-Berrie's Lass by Little Denver. She raced 69 times for 10 wins and 25 placings and was a multiple Wenty winner.

Ruby Hand was in-bred 2x2 to National Desire and Little Denver both of them out of legend National Lass.

Berrie's Lass (Little Denver-Berrigaan by Scotgaan) raced 84 times for 16 wins and 33 placings. She was also a Wenty winner. Berrie's Lass was a half sister to NSW GOTY Gallant Ruler the National Sprint winner.
