Well raced bitches prove themselves at stud

THE voice on the phone was familiar and he had a point to prove and reckoned I was the one to prove it for him.

"What about that old fallacy about bitches that raced often being failures at stud," he asked. "Am I right in thinking it is just that…a fallacy."

My caller is one of the stars of greyhound training so he had instances of his own that backed his claims.

Bitches that raced more than 100 times and then produced Group performers.

To disprove the fallacy, or prove it, I went to the one list that should have no complaints...the list of all time money earners in Australia.

The top 75 prizemoney earners is there for all to pick over, check out their credentials, see what makes them great and ultimately see if their mothers were indeed lightly raced, protected for their future worth at stud, or did they indeed produce the goods on the track themselves, and then the same at stud.

So here is what we found.

Of the top 75 money earners, one of their dams was unraced, and one had only two starts, one had seven starts.

Of the top 75. Nine of the dams raced between 0 and 20 starts. 26 of the 75 raced between 21 and 40 starts. 39 of the 75 raced 41 times or more. 22 of the 75 raced 60 times or more. 2 of the 75 raced 100 times or more.

Let's look at the top 10.

  1. Wow She's Fast ($2.26 million) her dam Fair Of Face raced 45 times for 14 wins

  2. She's A Pearl ($1.6 million) her dam Shez Impetuous raced 33 times for 7 wins

  3. Fanta Bale ($1.36 million) her dam Ucme Typhoon raced 68 times for 11 wins

  4. Good Odds Harada ($1.3 million) his dam Solar Pak raced 29 times for 8 wins

  5. Fernando Bale ($1.3 million) his dam Chloe Allen raced 85 times for 11 wins

  6. Mcinerney ($1.3 million) his dam Born Ali raced 90 times for 20 wins

  7. Dyna Double One ($1.16 million) his dam Crystin Bale raced 37 times for 9 wins

  8. Mystic Riot ($1.05 million) her dam Ready To Riot raced 26 times for 8 wins

  9. Handsome Prince ($1.036 million) his dam See Blue's Girl raced 32 times for 12 wins

  10. Tommy Shelby ($1.02 million) his dam Serena Fly High raced 83 times for 20 wins

The Wheeler family has proven beyond doubt that giving a race bitch a long and productive race career is no hindrance to her becoming a top notch broodbitch.

Just some of their greats to prove this are:

  • Fernando Bale whose dam Chloe Allen raced 85 times

  • Dyna Villa whose dam Roxio Bale raced 67 times

  • Dyna Patty whose dam Unix Bale raced 91 times

  • Orson Allen whose dam Desalle Bale raced 72 times

  • Dyna Nalin whose dam Tally Bale raced 129 times

  • Jarick Bale whose dam Houston Bale raced 84 times

  • Radley Bale whose dam Minkara Bale raced 81 times

  • Dyna Tron whose dam Gold Rush Bale raced 56 times

  • Hecton Bale whose dam Searle Bale raced 59 times

Consider this too, Greys Destiny raced 130 times in the US and came to Australia to produce champion Destini Fireball and a sensational litter.

Tally Bale, dam of above mentioned Dyna Nalin, raced 129 times.

If that does not prove the point then what does?

But, the race winning distances for each of those dams of the top money earners is another revelation. Every one of the mothers of the top 38 money earners, except two, won over 500m or more.

Of that top 38, 18 of the dams won to 500m, 10 won to 600m and eight won to 700m. Consider that distance racing to 700m is far less than sprints, then staying bitches certainly have a lot going for them as potential broodbitches.

And, to top off all of this, we refer to that wonderful direct damline to Floodgate, the Peter Giles superstar who raced 94 times for 25 wins. Her daughter Floodfawn raced 110 times for 39 wins and another daughter Ashlee Jeannine started 60 times for 28 wins.

This is the direct damline of current day superstars Up Hill Jill, My Redeemer, Koblenz, Ferdinand Boy, Fernando Mick etc.

Up Hill Jill raced 85 times for 38 wins and became the dam of Koblenz ($792,000).

Where's Demonica, dam of Up Hill Jill and My Redeemer, started 69 times for 23 wins. Floodgate (94 starts) is the third dam of Where's Demonica, 4th dam of Up Hill Jill, and 5th dam of Koblenz.

Just to prove our point again, we searched the leading broodbitches in Australia for 2020, 2021 and 2022 based on prizemoney won by their progeny.

This is the list, with the number of starts they had.

Fair Of Face (45 starts), Serena Fly High (83 starts), Born Ali (90 starts), Shez Impetuous (33 starts), Houston Bale (84 starts), Mepunga Rosie (75 starts), Tears Siam (34 starts), Zipping Lilly (21 starts), Up Hill Jill (85 starts), Bells Are Ringin (52 starts), Aston Miley (19 starts), See Blue's Girl (32 starts), Tiggerlong Dot (76 starts), Esparza (56 starts), Lala Shim (46 starts), Shima Song (65 starts), Fantastic Dotty (18 starts), Weblec Rose (47 starts), Who Told Lindylu (51 starts), Dyna Gypsy (4 starts), Captivating (14 starts), Speculate (9 starts), Cyndie's Magic (152 starts).

It goes on to Hope's Magic (138 starts), Mepunga Flame (75 starts), Alpha Demeter (72 starts), Zippy Daph (77 starts), Victa Victoria (134 starts), Paua To Avoid (72 starts), Tick Away Fire (76 starts), Sweet It Is (67 starts), Aussie Diamond (77 starts), Good Odds Angel (88 starts), Miami Fernando (62 starts).

Yes, where do we stop!

We stop with PROOF that a long and productive race career for a bitch is absolutely no hindrance to her becoming a great broodbitch.
