Meteor Monelli

DAVID Hobby, way over there in WA and back where he belongs breeding, rearing and training great greyhounds, had already showcased the Zack Monelli-Frida Monelli mating.

David's Columbus Monelli is a Group performer from the litter.

But, on Thursday night his litter brother Meteor Monelli ran a 29.29 to win at Sandown and highlight the pedigree once again.

And, what a pedigree match it is.

Dave Hobby has long been cautious of painting himself into a corner with the dogs he breeds. He was quick to latch onto the Barcia Bale/Fernando Bale cross and this is just one part of the pedigree of Meteor Monelli coming in 2x2 along the direct sireline on both sides of the pedigree.

But, Meteor Monelli, and his Group class litter brother Columbus, are in-bred 3x3 to litter sisters Fantasy Monelli and Joanne Monelli (Premier Fantasy-Foolish Girl).

It is the famous "Fooled" direct damline that served Reg Kay so well for so many, many years.

Hobby has always rated Zack Monelli highly. He was a track record breaker at Mandurah over a sprint but stayed 700m to win the G1 WA Galaxy and make a host of feature distance events.

Frida Monelli, too, was a track record breaker during her race career at Cannington over 380m and won a couple of feature races as well.

But, she is also a litter sister to Group 1 Perth Cup winner Trouper Monelli. All this direct damline have been quality performers.

ALSO at Sandown on Thursday night, Zara Marnie (Bernardo-Tidelina by Banjo Boy) was hugely impressive winning in 29.17.

It was her sixth win in just 10 starts.

Bernardo has been promising to continue to produce quality greyhounds for some time to follow on from his G1 Hobart 1000 winner Aussie Secret.

Tidelina (Banjo Boy-Easy Baby by El Grand Senor) won five races during her career and was a 29.67 Sandown winner.

But, her claim to fame is that she came from a litter that really made Banjo Boy, and especially her dam Easy Baby.

The standout was G1 Easter Egg placed Big Flood (33 wins, $186,000) but it also included Brueghelino (10 wins, $71,000) who has since gone on to become a fine producer herself as the dam of Group star Aston Gwen (18 wins, $143,000) etc.

I'm the first to admit, I found it difficult to see how the Easy Baby damline lifted itself off the canvas to start producing high class race dogs.

Easy Baby won three races and $5000 on the track and could get no further than 300m. She came from a litter of eight named offspring and only four were winners, two of them the winners of just one race.

Their mother, Uno I'm Loopy, did produce Hogmania (12 wins, $71,000) by Miagi but very little else.

It is a credit to those who have furnished this damline into some outstanding race dogs that they have been able to do so.

When Whiskey Riot went to stud after a wonderful race career, I always thought matings to him should include bitches with Cosmic Rumble in their make-up.

That's because Whiskey Riot's damsire is Collision who is a half brother to Spiritual Rumble the dam of Cosmic Rumble.

Last Thursday night at Sandown, Lakeview Patsy (Whiskey Riot-Lakeview Grace by Cosmic Rumble) won again over the distance, this time in 42.41.

She had already been a finalist in the G1 Bold Trease to prove the Collision/Spiritual Rumble cross at the highest level.

The intensity of her pedigree is even stronger.

In fact, Whiskey Riot's dam Ready To Riot is bred on the same Rumble Spirit/Token Prince cross as Lakeview Grace.

Rumble Spirit is a daughter of Malawi's Prince and her mother Follow Through is a daughter of Brother Fox. Token Prince is a SON of Malawi's Prince and his dam is by a SON of Brother Fox.

It is a cross that has proven itself time and time again, almost always via Collision.
