Quick Jagger

QUICK Jagger is rapidly making a name for himself way over there in WA, but it is Queensland and the Northern Rivers of NSW that can lay claim for much of his success.

The son of Dyna Nalin-Saving Bundles by High Earner runs this week in the Group 2 WA Derby final at Cannington.

He has already twice broken the track record at Cannington, first running 29.54 and then lowering that to 29.29. From 11 race starts he has won four and been placed six times. Just a baby, whelped in July 2015, he is obviously a work in progress.

He has already been second in the Mandurah Derby.

From a litter of seven, of which to date only three have won, Quick Jagger is a litter brother to promising Bundles Galore who won a feature Maiden final at Cannington recently among his two wins.

Quick Jagger is obviously a blueblood.

His sire Dyna Nalin (Ashom Bale-Tally Bale) is one of those "home bred" pedigrees Paul Wheeler puts together from time to time that exceeds all expectations. He won the Topgun, Perth Cup and Sale Cup, was second in the Maturity and third in the Australian Cup.

A powerhouse finisher, he was a stayer in the making after winning the Sale Cup but was retired to stud ... and promptly shunned because of it.

So Wheeler sent him to the US.

Saving Bundles (High Earner-Egg On Legs) is a hugely in-bred bitch who won the Mandurah Cup and twice made the Group 1 Perth Cup final one of those being a sixth in 2013 behind Dyna Nalin. From 17 wins she earned $155,000.

Her littermates, three of them, combined to win 31 races and $70,000 stakes. It was a great mating.

Saving Bundles' sire and dam High Earner and Egg On Legs are both bred on the Light Of Fire/Head Honcho cross.

Head Honcho was balanced in the pedigree of Saving Bundles. Litters by Collision and Surf Lorian from Egg On Legs were moderate.

Egg On Legs (Solve The Puzzle-Tymika Bar) was a multiple Albion Park winner over 520m and 600m and her mother produced Group performers Scar Bar and Bundanoon the latter a Casino Cup winner.

This is the famous Brindle County direct damline that has done the Northfield family on the Northern Rivers so proud. Its recent "best boast" are half relations Paw Licking and Weekend Binge.

Interesting to me is the fact Dyna Nalin and Saving Bundles provide a great "balance" for some of the aspects of each other's pedigree.

The major factor is the SON strain of Malawi's Prince found in Dyna Nalin to balance the two DAUGHTER strains of Malawi's Prince that are so dominant in the pedigree of High Earner, sire of Saving Bundles.

Interesting too is that Dyna Nalin's dam Tally Bale is bred on a reverse cross to Collision, grandsire of Saving Bundles, both carrying crosses of Malawi's Prince and Acacia Ablaze.

Acacia Ablaze is a son of Acacia Park whose litter sister Wild Flame is found as the seventh dam of Quick Jagger.

In the pedigree of Quick Jagger, speed influence Curryhill Brute is also duplicated. A number of the best progeny of High Earner carried this double.

When researching the pedigree of Quick Jagger, I looked closely at his sire Dyna Nalin.

His race record was 57 starts for 30 wins, 13 seconds and five thirds for $591,000 in stakes. He was a superstar. BUT, he was certainly a "freak" ... the obvious standout of his litter that was a mating that appears to have been designed by Paul Wheeler on a bit of a whim.

When Tally Bale was mated to Ashom Bale in 2011, Ashom Bale was long dead. He had been whelped in 1997. Tally Bale was 11 when she whelped champion Dyna Nalin.

The resultant litter had five named pups. Dyna Nalin was a champion, but one other was a non winner, one won once, one won twice and another won six races. The others were nothing to write home about at all.

Broodbitch owners were probably wise to give Dyna Nalin a miss at stud ... despite the success and obvious lightning ability now of Quick Jagger. It is my opinion the pedigree mix and subtle balances Dyna Nalin and Saving Bundles, plus the fact both were such high class gallopers, made a difference.

Dyna Nalin's winners to runners percentage is a very moderate 12 percent.

BROODBITCH owners will be interested to stud the pedigree of last Thursday night's 29.75 Albion Park winner Shoes To Fill (Tonk-Indiana Gold by Bombastic Shiraz).

Owned and trained by Terry Auckram, Shoes To Fill has won five and been placed four times in 10 starts.

Tonk, his sire, is bred on the Hallucinate/Bombastic Shiraz cross.

Indiana Gold, his dam, is bred on the Bombastic Shiraz/Where's Pedro cross.

It is an amazingly intense pedigree with Bombastic Shiraz coming in 3x2 in a most powerful position and the litter brothers Hallucinate and Where's Pedro 3x3 at the top and bottom of the pedigree.

Terry Auckram advises that Indiana Gold (from Spiral Nikita's direct damline) will be mated to Qld star Thirty Talks for her next mating and this too will be incredibly intense.

But if such intensity can produce 29.75 winners at Albion Park ... go for it.
