QUEENSLANDER Di Buxton can come up with a pretty good name for her greyhounds. OK, so a good dog will make a good name.
I remember going to trackwork at Doomben racecourse with my dad late in 1969 and seeing a grey two-year-old at work. The two-year-old's name was Gunsynd and he'd already won the Hopeful Stakes on debut.
My dad, ever the wise horseman, predicted the colt "would win again". I remember saying to dad surely they could have thought of a better name for the horse.

Di has been developing her own damline for a few generations now and great names have been part of her forte. Her latest rising star is Right On Cue (by Black Magic Opal).
Right On Cue broke the Novice class record when she ran 29.74 at Albion Park last Thursday night.
Her mother had a pretty good name as well ... Got A Moment. She won the Melbourne Cup and Brisbane Cup when trained by Jason Thompson. There is no doubt Jason and his wife Seona will be looking longingly at Right On Cue as a possible member of their Pearcedale kennels.
Got A Moment's mother was named Splitting Hairs and her dam was As Moments Go. Next mother Ground Breaker was out of Ground Ginger ... the list goes on.
Right On Cue was a natural to be mated to Black Magic Opal at some time of her breeding career because of the connection between Di and the Thompson kennel.
Got A Moment (Collision-Splitting Hairs) is bred on the same Awesome Assassin/Head Honcho cross as Awesome Opal the dam of Black Magic Opal. Doubling "chase" influence Head Honcho (he of the four close-up crosses of Temlee in his pedigree) is almost always a recipe for success.
What a pity Black Magic Opal was sold to China. He is a stud goldmine.
Right On Cue's direct female line runs to a bitch called Calypso Girl who is found in the damline of Wild Season the damsire of champion High Earner.
Calypso Girl was in-bred to famed broodbitch, Bob Doak's Secretly via her daughter Academy Lass (by Come On Clopook) and son William Todd (by Tivoli Dreamer).
The "nick" between Brother Fox and Pretty Short is based on the litter sisters Bonnie Secret and Newmore's Secret both of them daughters of Secretly.
And, Dennis and Ann Barnes' direct damline runs to Gay's Fancy who is also in-bred to Secretly.
Calypso Girl traces directly to Dinah Jet the dam of Take A Bow, a great race dog and sire of legend Benjamin John, and his sister Fairbairn Lady the dam of champion stayer Ragsie.
Fairbairn Lady is also the dam of Del Bairn who just happens to be the damsire of such race and breeding greats as Tangairn and Eaglehawk Star who are EVERYWHERE in pedigrees of today.
Most interestingly, Eaglehawk Star is the sire of Placid Dove who comes into the pedigree of Right On Cue three times.
Right On Cue is the daughter of a Melbourne Cup-winning sire and Melbourne Cup-winning dam ... the perfect example of "breed the best to the best".
ANGLE Park's Champion Puppy Stakes winner Rhynstone Teddy is another with a pedigree of interest.
The son of Paw Licking-Pearl's Bonnie by Bombastic Shiraz, he counted among those he beat last Thursday night his litter brother Cooper Scooper.
Pearl's Bonnie is from the famed Berrigan/Berrie's Lass damline, a line NSW legend Richie Dean utilised with such wonderful results years ago.
Rhynstone Teddy is in-bred 5x4 to Richie's famous multiple Group winning dog Little Denver (incestuously in-bred to Zimbabwe and her litter brother Chief Dingaan).
But he also carries a 4x4 cross of the genetic sisters Flying Amy and True Temptation.
Rhynstone Teddy is saturated with the dominant family of the litter sisters Zulu Moss and Riviera Moss. He has three crosses of Chief Dingaan and three of Zimbabwe (Temlee-Zulu Moss), plus a cross of Miss Lemoss (Temlee-Riviera Moss).
Pearl's Bonnie (dam of the Champion Puppy winner) won six races including a 600m at Angle Park. Her litter to Kilty Lad produced Rhynstone Ashley (3rd G3 Johnstone Mem to Worm Burner) and Rhynstone Jetta (3rd in the Champion Puppy the year before and a finalist in the Strathalbyn Cup).
Pearl's Bonnie is out of Pearl Hand a Wenty and Sandown winner over 700m and finalist in the G1 Association Cup and G2 Dillon Memorial.
Next dam Berrie's Lass produced multiple Group performers including Tommy Hand, Magic Hand, Air Loom, Sweet Hand, Brilliant Hand and Pearl Hand herself.
Berrie's Lass was a sister to top class galloper Gallant Ruler.
The direct damline of Rhynstone Teddy traces to Detaprime a sister to G1 Nat Derby finalist Kanga Jet.
She is the fourth dam of Applaud who sired Brookside Bear (G1 Adelaide Cup). Both Applaud and his son Brookside Bear ended up at stud in the UK.
Brookside Bear became the sire of Irish Puppy Derby winner Droopys Brooklyn and the damsire of Blue Riband winner Young Sid.
